1.Force yourself into a position that you can’t back out. When we decided to leave our home for a life of adventure, it was a very BIG decision. Setting a date to end our tenancy meant that we couldn’t back out. We took a measured risk to get outside of our comfort zone. 2.Don’t let people guilt trip you into staying. Well meaning friends and family may try to keep you nearby (and that’s understandable) but don’t let their wants override your personal dreams. We were very lucky to have supportive friends and family, but we do know of friends who’ve put their dreams on the back burner for fear of upsetting close relatives- don’t do that. In the end people who are worth having in your life, will want you to ultimately be happy. 3.Massive family/partner support Be united in your goal for a freedom lifestyle, allow people to help you out and don’t be afraid to ask for assistance. We were blown away by the amount of support we were given by friends and family. Don’t make assumptions that people will think you’re crazy for doing what you’re doing, there are some very cool people out there, and who knows...they might be thinking about doing the same thing too. 4. Set a rough plan A plan with no goal, is just a wish. Make sure that you plan and plan some more. Planning your finances and logistical needs is key- but have fun with it at the same time. Check out our quick FREE goal setting sheet here 5.Don’t do it out of desperation. You possibly may not make the best decisions. A few years back we felt in a desperate situation as a family, and tried to jump ship for Portugal, we had no money and that made us vulnerable. To cut a long story short, lots went wrong with our cars and we were prevented from going to live there. In hindsight I was glad this happened, We were running away from things, and it wasn’t planned properly. 6.Work out what kind of person are you and what kind of freedom do you want? If you can make friends easily and don’t rely on a heavy support network, then your plans will be very different. Our whole adventure is also about inspiring families to do what we’ve donn- so there will be little people to consider. World schooling/unschooling approach is brilliant for this, as it takes the need to attend school off of the table. You can sign up for our newsletter where we’ll inform you when our Unschooling Ebook is released. 7.Develop a regular income that you can maintain This is the BIG kahuna of the Freedom lifestyle. You know you’re a gypsy soul, but now you need the finances to keep you going in a modern world. It’s a hard old slog to make consistent money online, but it can be done. We’ve had a go a pretty much everything, from working agency in hospitals and care homes, to courier work and illustration projects, but the most freedom (we’ve found) comes from earning a steady income online. You can find out more about how we make money here. 8.Financial commitments. Ensure your previous financial commitments are wrapped up nicely paid off, or you’ve set up processes for them to be paid on a regular basis. This takes the headache out of worrying. For us, we made the leap because we just knew that our money would go further without the commitment of rent. 9.Organise yourself and possessions. Don’t under estimate how much time you will need to organise the things you will need to sell, store, or giveaway. It’s a HUGE physical and emotional undertaking. Get cosy with organisation . 10.Get ready for great change and challenges. For all the stress (and there will be plenty) you WILL inspire others to take leaps in their own lives. Being a trailblazer isn’t easy, but it’s SO worth it in the long run. You’ll have plenty of stories to tell your grandchildren.
